Comparing and Contrasting

Today in E.L.A. classes we started our comparing and contrasting study. We were introduced to the topic through a fun, interactive game on a website called Comprehension Upgrade. In the game, we used a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast:
  • volleyball and basketball

  • wolves and dogs
  • The U.S. Flag and The United Kingdom Flag

  • coniferous trees and deciduous trees

We hope you liked your introduction to studying how things are alike and different. Later this week, we will be incorporating European Literature into our study as we compare and contrast the American version of Cinderella to the British version of the story, Cap O' Rushes.
Want to play some more comparing and contrasting games? Try out the interactive web activity: Help Lee Decide.

You can use the skills you have learned to help Lee. He is a high school student trying to make a decision about a summer job. Come back and leave a comment and tell us what you learned.
Ms.Launey and Mrs.Lopez

P.S. Have no fear, The Weekly News Broadcasts will start back up again when Ms.Launey is fully recovered. We will make sure you are still updated with classroom happenings through our blog posts.

I think that is really cool that you were able to do the Venn diagrams on the computer! When I learnt them in Elementary school we had to draw and write in them all by hand (okay, I sound old saying that).

Can't wait to see you Weekly New Broadcasts!

Dear ms. Launey.
I think that venn diagrams are a really cool way to organize data.
Thank you for giving me this fun project during my trip. I noticed
that there are a lot more differences than similarities between Oregon and Florida.

Erina,
I'm glad you were able to notice so many things to compare and contrast on your trip. Make sure you bring your Venn Diagram with you to school next week so that you can share it with the class. We are going to be learning to write compare and contrast essays and you can do yours on Oregon and Florida! Can't wait to see it!

Hello, this is Janine from the University of Regina. Venn diagrams are a great way to compare things. I love Cinderella, I have read and watched other versions of it too, but my favorite is still the cartoon Disney version! I can't wait to watch your next News Broadcast!

Ms. Launey,

That was really fun!! That was a really fun way to do venn diagrams. I had loads of fun doing that.
I might teach my sister about venn diagrams. That would be really good for her since she is only in 1st grade. She would know it when she learns it later on.
