The Thing About Georgie by Lisa Graff

Our first chapter book read aloud is The Thing About Georgie by Lisa Graff. We are in the third chapter, and our 4th grade students are loving it! They thoroughly enjoy getting to know the main character, Georgie Washington Bishop, who is a ten year old dwarf. Georgie's parents are accomplished musicians of normal size. In Chapter 3, we learned that Georgie's mom is having a baby, and we are predicting that Georgie is wondering if his sibling will be a dwarf like him or of normal size like his parents. Our students are learning that Georgie cannot do everything that they can do, because of his size. ...but then again, some things he is able to do. For example, Georgie and his best friend, Andy, have a dog walking business, and Georgie walks the smaller dogs like poodles and Andy walks the larger dogs like Great Danes. We know that Georgie has a good heart because he is trying to make money so that he can buy his parents decent presents at Christmas time and still have money left over to buy comics for himself. Our students are very engaged and curious to see how Georgie is going to deal with Jeanie the Meanie, a fellow classmate who constantly pesters him. Already, we are becoming aware of the differences in others, how we perceive others and how they perceive us. Now that you have a little introduction of our read aloud, you might be interested to learn what our readers have to say about this highly entertaining book. Stay tuned! Our students will be posting soon!

I can't believe Georgie is getting a little brother or sister. I wonder if the child is going to be "normal" like he said. It would be weird to have a younger sibling grow taller than you, wouldn't it?

I predict that Georgie's sibling is going to be "normal", but I think even though Georgie might feel left out at first, he will grow to love his baby brother or baby sister. Yes, I agree that it would be weird to have a younger sibling grow taller than you but Georgie will adjust. All of our students are totally engaged in this piece of literature and cannot wait to see what happens next.

Well Georgie will love his new baby brother or sister even though it's normal and he thinks he is left out. But his parents still love Georgie and I'm shure the new baby will love him too.

I am enjoying our book. I like how it describes how Georgie, the dwarf, is handling being different in the world.

Yes it would Sky! I agree with all your comments. I would not be
one bit if my younger sibling is way taller than me 'cause Goergie is only 3ft. tall! His younger sibling would be way taller than Goergie! I also feel so sorry for Andy because I would hate that if my grandma would be moved into my room until I move out or she finds a house! I would just hate that!

Like Ms. Launey said I really want to find out if his sibling is going to be a boy or a girl. I predict it will be a girl.

I think Georgie will get jealous at first but, then he will be happy that he has a younger sibling.

I predict that georgie's sibling is going to be normal.Even though his sibling will one day be taller then him, he will be happy to have a brother or sister who cares about him and loves him. But, I agree with Sky that it would be creepy having a younger sibling that is taller then you. But,both of them are special.

I think Georgie feeling bad because he is a dwarf and i think he not be treated that way. I would'nt like it if i would stay 3-ft tall forever people would pick on me and i would'nt like that at all. sincerly Niko.

I think the thing about Georgie is funny and cool. And I would'nt like being a dwarf forever being 3-ft tall because people would pick on me all of the time and stare at me. I think The Thing About Georgie is a great book and I encourage everybody to read it because it teaches you to be a good person to anybody that is not normal.

Sincerely,

Niko

I think that he does not want to be a big brother because he or she will be normal and if he is normal he would be taller than him.

I just love the books that you have especially the Piggybook and the The Thing About Georie. I hope that Georgie likes his baby brother or sister. In the Piggybook I hope that the girl that does there chores come back. I also like it when they turn into pigs.Sicererly,Tatiana AP#11

I think that Geogie's mom screamed for two reasons,
1.She was going to have her baby.
2.The lights went out and the dad tripped and stabed her with the keys.

Like ms.Launey and Jeremie said it is very sad that Andy and Georgie are in a fight and that was kind of mean when Andy nocked on Geogie's door and shoved the yellow poster in his face! I wonder when Georgie and Andy will make up! Sydney F.
