The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins
by Barbara Kerley
With drawings by Brian Selznick
This is the true and unforgettable story of Victorian artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins who was a dedicated and passionate artist. He had a goal of building life-size models of dinosaurs envisioned from scientific fossils in the hope of educating the world about these awe-inspiring ancient animals. This was during a time when no one knew what dinosaurs were like.
He is a creative man who stretched the boundaries of what has been done before, and his legacy lives on today.
Watch this clip on Youtube and have your child recount the story as you flip through the incredible artwork together, page by page.

I am so glad that you love the message, Ashley and Leanne, that our students can take with them in their lives. I fell in love with this book when I read it for the first time! What a role model in perseverance, dedication, and believing in yourself. Follow your dreams and let nothing get in the way! I agree, Camden, it is a great video! Did you tell the story to your family as you looked at the pictures together? I hope so!

I loved the book so much I checked the it out from the media center. I was sad that Waterhouse Hawkins had trouble with William Tweed and didn't get to build the museum.

I agree with you, Katelyn. It was truly devastating for Waterhouse Hawkins to see his life work destroyed by a bully. I am glad to hear that you checked out your own copy to read from the Media Center.
Happy Reading!
